On the last day of our holiday in Luxembourg we made a visit to the Musée de la Bataille des Ardennes in La Roche, Belgium.
La Roche was bombed during the Battle of the Bulge and fierce fights took place in and around the village. Just outside the center you will find two tanks: An M4A1 Sherman tank and a British M10 “Achilles” Tank Destroyer!
The museum tells an amazing story about the Battle of the Bulge in the area of La Roche. With 6 situation maps, they tell you how the Germans started their promising offensive and how it ended. As soon as you walk
upstairs you will find a room completely filled with U.S. and British items and well suited mannequins. In the picture to the right you can see a showcase completely filled with different cigarettes, soap, shaving creams and chewing gum. The hearts of collectors will probably beat faster when they see this in real life!
I was surprised to see a helmet of the 5th Infantry Division in the museum. Beneath the helmet was a little note which explained their role in the Battle of the Bulge. It put a smile on my face!
What I really liked about the museum was their “Veterans’ Corner” in which they display a lot of items from different veterans who served in different divisions. I remember visiting this museum a year ago when I was completely surprised to see the jacked of Joe Cicchinelli, a veteran of the 551st PIR, 82nd Airborne Division. Joe’s story is a very special story. He was one of the 2 survivors of his whole company. Joe was taken prisoner during the Battle of the Bulge. You can read about him by clicking here!
The upper level of the museum contains Germans items only. The power of the German army during the Battle of the Bulge is clearly visible! A must-see for people who are interested or collect German military items.
I highly suggest this museum when you’re staying in or near La Roche. It gives you a perfect image of the Battle of the Bulge in and around La Roche! Oh and if you’re staying for the night, check Hotel Le Luxembourg for a room and make sure you eat pizza in the center of La Roche!
